PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The schedule was slightly changed and instead of facing Binghamton the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) took on Saint Joseph's University (SJU) in a double header on day two of the Villanova Baseball Bash. The Hawks of Saint Joe's fell to the Hawks of UMES 11-3 and 4-0 in two nine inning games played on Saint Joseph's home field.

In game one, Saint Joseph's (5-10) scored in each of the first four innings on the way to a 11-3 victory. Jason Hessler was strong in his six innings of work, earning his first win of the season. Hessler allowed three runs, all of them unearned, while scattering six hits, walking one, and striking out eight.

UMES (0-17) used two singles and a throwing error to take a quick 1-0 lead in the first. Phillip Vaughn singled to second for an infield hit and went to second when Remo Orsini singled through the right side. A double steal would move up both runners for the Fighting Hawks and a throwing error by the catcher would allow Vaughn to score.

Saint Joseph's scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to go up by one. With two outs and Joe Cook on second, Dewey Oriente laced a single through the right side to drive in the first run for the Hawks. Mike Boyland then sent a 1-0 pitch into the gap in right center for an RBI triple to put SJU ahead, 2-1.

The Hawks extended the lead in the second as two errors, four stolen bases, a groundout, and a wild pitch allowed the Hawks to plate three runs without recording a hit.

UMES scored two runs in the third on an RBI double and a groundout. Vaughn reached with one out on an error by the third basemen. Orsini doubled him home when he hit a shot down the left field line. Orsini went to third on the throw and a groundout from Pat Hercinger would record the RBI and plate Orsini.

SJU took control in the bottom of the third. The Hawks scored twice on a single by Matt Barnathan and a double by David Valesente to go ahead 7-3.

The fourth inning saw Saint Joseph's plate the final four runs of the game. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Oriente hit into a fielders choice to bring home Jeremy Jakubowski. Oriente and Cook then executed a double steal to push the lead to six. A bases-loaded walk by Valesente and an RBI single off of the pitcher's leg by Jereme Scott set the final margin.

After Hessler's exit, Andrew Powers and Pat Monaghan held UMES scoreless for the final three innings to preserve the victory.

Mike Roberts took the game one loss, not looking like himself. The usually solid starter only managed three and a third innings, allowing five hits and 10 runs, eight of which were earned.

Orsini and catcher Mike Guy both had three hits in the game while Vaughn scored twice.

In game two, hurler Don Werner dazzled through seven-and-a-third innings as the Hawks earned the doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 win.

Saint Joseph's got on the board first after Tim Smith reached on an error by the right fielder. Smith stole second and then came around on an RBI single by Mike Coleman to give SJU a 1-0 lead.

SJU tallied another run in the fifth on a successful suicide squeeze play, as a bunt by Brian Hartsell drove in a charging Chris Cashman to double the lead.

The lead was doubled once again after UMES starter Ken Richardson wore down in the sixth. With the bases full of Hawks, Coleman was hit by a pitch and Hartsell hit a grounder deep in the hole for an infield single and his second RBI to make it a 4-0 game.

Werner (2-1) was stellar, allowing just three hits while striking out seven, including six in a row in the middle innings. Mark Dolaghan notched his first save of the season, working one-and-two-thirds innings.

Richardson took the loss for UMES despite a solid outing of six and a third innings. He allowed just five hits and four runs, only two of which were earned. The Fighting Hawks offense mustered just three hits in game two Orsini and Jorge Pichardo had singles while Josh Dunham doubled.

The Fighting Hawks continue their spring break trip next at Savannah State, Longwood and Coppin State.
