PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Dustin Longchamps worked seven strong innings, striking out eight and allowed just two earned runs as he picked up his third win of the season, 8-4 and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) won game one of a doubleheader against Norfolk State University (NSU). UMES lost the second game of the double header 3-2 despite another strong pitching outing on the arm of Mike Roberts. The Hawks (7-24, 4-4 MEAC) picked up another important conference win, their fourth of the season in the game one win. Joel Gonzalez and Tyler Winch both went 3-4 in the game with a run while Gonzalez added two RBI and Winch one. Justin Hoban and Kevin Hillenburg both had a pair of hits in the game. The Spartans (16-14, 5-3 MEAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but the Hawks answered back in the third with a run. Winch led-off with one of his hits, this one a single to center, but got out on a Derrick Baker hit ball that resulted in a fielder's choice on a botched double play. Baker went to second on an error by the shortstop. Eric Gaines that hit a single to left to plate Baker and get UMES on the board. The Hawks got two more in the fourth as Ken Richardson reached on an error with two outs. James Walls drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Winch who doubled to doubled to center scoring Richardson. Another error by the NSU centerfielder allowed Winch to go to third and Walls to score. Up 3-2, NSU rallied and scored one in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a one run lead. The Spartans went to their bullpen and brought in Foss, followed by Seal. UMES jumped all over the NSU relievers, plating four runs. They started when Walls was hit by a pitch with one out. Winch hit an infield single to put runners on first and second. Baker then struck out to make it two outs. No matter. NSU brought in another arm from the bullpen in Seal to face the top of the Hawk line-up. Gaines drew a walk to load the bases and the UMES's top hitter, Gonzalez, singled to right, scoring Walls and Winch. An error by the catcher allowed Gaines to score and Gonzalez to go to second. He then scored on a Justin Hoban single. The Hawks added one in the seventh on a Richardson run, as he scored unearned when Winch reached on an error. Of the eight Hawk runs scored only two were earned, but UMES would take it and pick up the win. In the game, NSU's Foran had three of the Spartans nine hits. Game two was a different story. The Hawks sent out Roberts for the seven inning game. He wound up working a complete game, allowing just five NSU hits and three runs, all earned, striking out a pair. The fourth inning was the only one seeing runs in the game. NSU scored as Foran drew a walk and scored on a Juan Serrano double to left and advanced on the throw. Serrano then scored from third on a Banks ground out. Savage then doubled and later scored on a Smith infield single. UMES answered back with a pair in the bottom of the inning. Hoban hit a one out single up the middle. After another out Josh Dean singled to right center and moved Hoban to second. Richardson then singled himself through the left side, scoring Hoban and putting Dean on third. Dean then scored on a double steal attempt that got Richardson out but not until after Dean recorded the run. The Hawks threatened in the final inning. Dean led-off with a double and went to third on a Richardson single. As Richardson stole second Dean left on the throw but got out at the plate. Walls flied out and the Spartans intentionally walked the hot hitting Winch to get to Tyler Love who struck out to end the game. There would be no more runs in the game and the Hawks would fall one run short. Schabacker would pick up the win for the Spartans. Serrano picked up two NSU's five hits. Richardson and Dean both had a pair of hits in the game. UMES out hit the Spartans ,six to five in the contest. The two teams, who were unable to play yesterday, will make up the third game of the series later in the season. UMES is back in action this weekend at North Carolina A & T in Greensboro, N.C. for a three game MEAC series. |
