PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) dropped a triple overtime thriller, 94-91, to the visiting Hornets of Shenandoah University in an exhibition contest Tuesday night. The DIII Hornets proved as pesky as their name sake, grabbing lose balls, out rebounding the bigger Hawks, and out shooting their DI opponent. Ed Tyson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) was the highlight film again for the Hawks, netting 32 points on 11-of-32 shooting. UMES (0-1) dropped their opener to Virginia Commonwealth last Friday night and returned home for their exhibition contest against Shenandoah. Last season UMES topped the Hornets in regular season action 88-64. Shenandoah jumped out to a six point lead to open the game and extended that lead to seven on three occasions and never relinquished it until the 9:54 mark of the first half when Denzel Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa./Lincoln H.S.) hit a runner to give UMES the 21-20 advantage. A back and forth battle ensued in the first half, with five ties and seven lead changes but the Hawks took a 38-35 lead into the locker room. From there the Hornets seemed to play well enough to keep it within striking distance, getting nine second half points from Jeremiah Lawrence. Strike they did; the Hornets tied it with 5:30 to play at 57 all. They kept the lead for most of the final five minutes. With just 29 seconds left UMES tied the game on a Ishmawiyl McFadden (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz H.S.) lay-in to send it to overtime. After two overtimes the game was still not decided. With the score tied at 85 going to the third overtime UMES would never lead. Lawrence would make one of two free throws to take the one point lead and then Shenandoah would get a lay-up from Stevie Johns to make it 88-85. Josh Bright (Salisbury, Md./Morgan State Univ.) would steal the ball and lay it in to cut it back to one. Johns would make two more free throws after being fouled by Tyson. Tyson would get two points right back on a jumper with under two minutes to play and then make two free throws on the other side of a Onyie Onunaku jumper. With the lead down to one B.J. Nimocks (Detroit, Mich./Cloud City C.C.) would foul Johns on the inside and he made two free throws with a few seconds left on the clock. A last minute UMES shot would rim out giving Shenandoah the win. Tyson's 32 points were a game high, while McFadden and Marc Davis (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook H.S.) each had 17 points. Nimocks added 12 points off the bench. For the Hornets Lawrence had a double double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Lamar Bentley had 20 points off the bench. Johns added 17 points, while Lenzie Adams and Onunaku had 14 and 10 points respectively. Shenandoah out rebounded the Hawks 49 to 44, out shot them 44.8 percent to 41.4 percent and were better at the free throw line, making 12 and attempting 13 more shots than the Hawks. The Hornets committed a whopping 33 turnovers but their hustle paid off inside, as they dominated the play in the paint. UMES had 14 turnovers. The Hawks open their home season on Thursday, November 15 when they host Stony Brook and 7:00 p.m. |
