PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks looked like a well rested well prepared team in the first half of a battle with Canisius College, jumping out to a 6-0 lead and up by as many as 16 in the first half. The second half was a different story however, as the Hawks shot just under 22 percent and looked like a team without a leader or scorer. The Golden Griffins came to play in the second half and shot a blistering 52 percent, packed in the zone, limiting second chance opportunities and controlling the tempo. Their play earned them a 70-60 victory over UMES. "I know what happened, Canisius came to play in the second half," UMES Head Coach Fred Batchelor said. "We thought they were the same team they were in the first 20 minutes and they weren't. They came to play, they played more aggressive, they made plays and they stepped up their defense and it really shut us down." UMES (4-5) was up 40-26 at the break but the 14 point lead was quickly whittled down by the Golden Griffiths of Canisius (5-7). Amanda Cavo hit a three pointer and got three more going to the basket with the hoop and the harm to cut it to six, 40-34 just two and a half minutes into the second half. Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich./Lansing Home School) would answer with a jumper to stop the streak but Canisius would get a jumper by Ellie Radke and one from Brianna Lucas to make it a four point game. Radke then got another jumper and drew contact, making it a one point game, 42-41 with just over 15 minutes to play. Canisius got another basket from Cavo at the 15:00 minute mark to take their first lead of the game. UMES and the Golden Griffiths would trade the lead one more time before Canisius took it for good with 8:28 to play, 49-47. They would put together a run of 23 to five, to take the lead. The Golden Griffiths would play solid defense and get quality shots and lead by as many as 14 in the second half. Brittany Adkins (Millsboro, Del/Sussex Tech H.S.) and April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle, H.S.) both scored in the final seconds to cut the lead to ten, making it a 70-60 win for Canisius. Adkins and McBride would both account for a double double in the game. Adkins posted 11 points and 10 rebounds while McBride recorded her third straight double double with 19 points and 11 boards. Veltkamp was the only other Hawk in double figures with 10 points. Cavo led the Golden Griffiths with 17 points while Brittane Russell had 15 and Radke added 13. Russell led the rebounding effort with eight. UMES out rebounded Canisius 47-35 for the game but did not in the second half. The Hawks posted a 30-13 edge on the glass in the first half but were out rebounded in the second frame 22-17. The Lady Hawks were without sophomore guard Tiffany Reid who missed the game with a head injury. She is expected to return to the line-up when UMES hosts Army on January 3, 2008. That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off. |
