March 2, 2007 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Head Women's Basketball Coach Fred Batchelor announced today that two players, Danielle Cooper and Jelila Abdul-Bassit, will be suspended for the rest of the season due to a violation of team rules. The two guards, a junior and a sophomore respectively, from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team missed last Wednesday's game at Hampton University and will miss Saturday's regular season finale at Howard University. They will also miss post season play, at the very least a first round game at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament on Tuesday, March 6. That match-up will see the seventh seeded Lady Hawks face the tenth seeded Norfolk State University Spartans at 11:00 am in the Tournament's first game. Cooper had played in 28 games, starting 21of them. She was averaging 5.8 points per game and had tallied a team leading 108 assists. Abdul-Bassit was averaging 6.3 points per game, fourth on the team. She was the team's leading three-point shooter, knocking down 41 on the year. Abdul-Bassit has played in 27 games, starting five. |
