The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men and women’s basketball teams have announced their schedules for the upcoming 2008-09 season. The men, led by new head coach Frankie Allen, will look to rebound from last season’s 4-29 finish without the help of leading scorer Ed Tyson, who was deemed academically ineligible for the upcoming season. Returning four players this year, the Hawks have brought in a strong recruiting class of six freshman and three transfers. With a schedule that features matchups with the Naval Academy, University of Oklahoma and University of Nebraska, the Fighting Hawks will not see conference play until December 4, when they travel to rival Delaware State. Their season tips-off on Tuesday, November 4 in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center against Swarthmore at 7:30 p.m., for an exhibition game, before they hit the road on November 14 against Stony Brook University.
Lady Hawks Head Coach Fred Batchelor is looking to continue last years’ success. Improving the record from 11-20 in 2006-07, to 17-13 last season, the women are primed to advance into the latter rounds of the MEAC tournament. In his fifth season with UMES, Batchelor has a core of seven returners. With a recruiting class of seven freshmen and one transfer, the Lady Hawks will try to fill the holes left by Kristi Veltkamp and Brittney Adkins. Their season will begin at home on Tuesday, November 11 versus Elizabeth City State at 7 p.m. in an exhibition game, and follow up with another home appearance against Syracuse University on November 16 at 6 p.m. The women will see play against Army, American University and the University of Delaware this season. Conference play will not begin until 2009 when the Lady Hawks visit Delaware State on January 6. The schedules for both teams can be viewed at www.umeshawks.com. |
