ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) finished up 2007 with 11 wins and a third place finish in the Holiday Jamboree, hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) on December 27, 28 and 29. UMES was topped just four times in the event and now boasts a 51-12 mark on the season. Kristina Frahm (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East H.S.) led the charge for the third ranked Lady Hawks, talking All-Tournament Team honors and finishing individually third place overall in the field of 70 plus bowlers, making up 14 different teams. UMES opened the tournament with four straight wins in head-to-head competition. They defeated #16 St. Francis College (NY) (938-947), #5 Sacred Heart (954-818), #14 Southern (888-947) and Morgan State (924-799). They lost their final match of the opening day to #18 St. Peter's College, 878-842. On day two UMES sandwiched a loss to #7 New Jersey City (1069-926) with four wins. They opened with a pair of conference schools, rolling over Howard (1033-876) and #8 Delaware State (1018-835). On the back end of the loss the defeated Kutztown (880-817) and #6 FDU (970-914). In the ten games bowled, UMES amassed a whopping 17 games over 200. Frahm, who was consistent, bowled ten games total, seven of which were over 200. She tallied a high of 215 in the win over Morgan State but also posted games of 214, 211, 209, 205, 203 and 202. For the tournament she averaged a 199.8. Christine King (Upper Darby, Pa./Archbishop Predergast), Jessica Worsley (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial H.S.) and 2006 All-American Laura Zanrucha (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley H.S.) all had three games over 200. King picked up a 228 over Delaware State and posted a 221 and a 205. Worsley rolled her second highest game of the year, a 244 against FDU, while also totaling a 224 and a 213. Zanrucha scored a 211, also against FDU and posted a two 208s. Sara DiScioscia (Hampton, Va./Poquoson H.S.) posted the other 200 game by rolling a 203 against St. Francis. On the final day of the event the Hawks played Baker games and posted a win over #12 Adelphi 752-712 and over Cheyney 732-412. They fell to #18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) 791-749. In order to determine the placing for the event UMES had two more matches, best of seven Baker games to play. They fell to tournament champion FDU four games to three, despite outscoring the Knights 1374-1297. They rebounded however to avenge an earlier loss to UWW and defeat them four games to one with a pin fall of 1008-935. The Hawks take some time off before bowling in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) event in Hampton, Va. on January 19-20. |
