April 11, 2008
OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) couldn't keep the momentum up after a five hour break as Vanderbilt University topped the Lady Hawks 4-2 in the final match of the day at the 2008 NCAA Championships. Vanderbilt, who started out in the loser's bracket thanks to a 4-0 loss to UMES to start the day, kept their hopes alive with the win over UMES. In other action New Jersey City University (NJCU), who, like UMES, entered the round undefeated, fell to Arkansas State University (ASU) and all four teams now have a loss and will play rematches tomorrow to determine who moves on. Moving on is exactly what UMES will do if they top the Commodores. They hope a win puts them up for the second straight year with a chance to win the National Championship. That match will be televised tomorrow live on ESPNU at 8:00 p.m. ET. UMES never seemed to regain their momentum after the lay-off. The reward for continuing to win, a bye, actually hurt both undefeated teams as Vanderbilt topped the Hawks by scores of 194-169, 173-179, 223-160, 179-205, 212-174 and 184-155. ASU topped NJCU 4-2 (210-176, 186-166, 212-199, 185-244, 166-214, 207-199). "Tomorrow we plan on coming focused and ready to win a national championship," Head Coach Sharon Brummell said. UMES gets started tomorrow, facing off against Vandy at 5:30 p.m. (ET). Fans can follow the action live at www.NCAAsports.com. |
