MILLSBORO, Del. - One of the nation's premiere teams hosted one of the nation's premier tournaments this past weekend as the #4 University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks played host to a 20 team field at the third annual Eastern Shore Hawk Classic. UMES took third place overall, posting a 9-2 mark and improving their record to 25-4 on the year. The event kicked off at 9:00 am on Saturday, November 17th with head-to-head matches. The Hawks opened the tournament with a win over #17 Adelphi 960-923 and a defeat of #6 New Jersey City University 925-915. Heartbreak set in for UMES as #7 Sacred Heart topped the Hawks by one pin, 968-967 in game three. The maroon and grey quickly rebounded to take game four from #19 St. Peter's College 944-766 and then topped #16 Bethune-Cookman 912-735. In the sixth game of the day UMES topped Saint Paul's College 969-799. Individually UMES was led by Sara DiScioscia who averaged a 197.67 over six games, totaling 1,186 pins. Kristina Frahm was right behind her in tenth place overall with 1,181 pins a 196.83 average. All-American Laura Zanrucha was 15th with 1,144 pins and an average of 190.67 while Martha Perez and Jessica Worsley were 22nd and 23rd overall. Perez averaged a 180.83 while Worley posted a 180.17. The difficult sport shot saw the Hawks tally six 200 plus games. Frahm had a 227, DiScioscia had a 212, 205, and 225 to account for half of the six, while Zanrucha rolled a 200 and Worsley a 209. Day two saw the 20 team field compete in five baker matches of four games each. The Hawks rolled to four consecutive wins, knocking off Winston-Salem State 710-491, Kutztown University 736-723, Coppin State 679-524 and North Carolina Central 724-553. The match everyone was waiting for occurred in the final contest of the day, a re-match of last year's NCAA National Championship. Then, #1 Vanderbilt bested the Hawks by less then 50 pins in game seven winning the title four games to three. This time the result was a little more one sided as the Commodores showed off their championship form, winning 838-669. Vanderbilt would go on to win the tournament, tallying 10,113 pins and posting a 10-1 mark. Their one loss came to Adelphi, a team UMES beat to open the event. The 2005 NCAA Champions, Fairleigh Dickinson University took second place with 9,684 pins and an identical 10-1 mark. The hawks were third, posting 9,205 pins while New Jersey City was fourth with 9,155 pins, but a 7-4 record. Sacred Heart, Delaware State and Adelphi would finish fifth, sixth and seventh respectively and all post 9-2 marks. Saint Peter's College and Saint Francis (NY) College would round out the top ten. "It was a great event," said tournament organizer and UMES Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "We are in a good spot as a team right now, we see where we have to be and who we have to beat. As far as the tournament goes I think we pulled off another exciting event, one all the coaches and participants enjoyed. We hope to see them all again next year." UMES will next travel to St. Louis, Mo. For the Team match Games on November 23 and 24. |
