Oct. 30, 2006 Dover, Del. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling team was ranked seventh in the nation in the first Natioanl Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) poll. The Lady Hawks are coming off three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title in 2006. The following release appears compliments of the NTCA. Fairleigh Dickinson University of Teaneck, NJ, the 2006 NCAA national champions, has been ranked as the number one team in the first 2006-07 national poll, conducted by the National Tenpins Coaches Association. This is the first of six national polls that the NTCA will release this season. The NTCA is the voice and leadership of NCAA bowling. Fairleigh Dickinson received seven out of 12 first place votes. The Knights will begin the defense of its title this weekend when they open their season at a Northeast Women's Collegiate Bowling Conference meet in Wallington, NJ. The University of Nebraska - Lincoln, winners of the 2004 and 2005 national championships, has been ranked second, receiving four first place votes. The Huskers, third place finishers in last year's NCAA national finals, launch their season at the Cheeseland Classic in Whitewater, WI on November 9, 2006. Ranked third was the University of Central Missouri of Warrensburg, MO. The Jennies are a three-time NCAA national finalist, winning the second place trophy in 2004 and 2005. Central Missouri begins its season this weekend with road matches versus Arkansas State and Fontbonne University. The fourth and fifth ranked teams are Vanderbilt University of Nashville, TN and Alabama A&M University of Normal, AL, respectively. Vanderbilt was a national finalist last season in only its second season of existence. Alabama A&M was the national runner-up last season. These two powerhouses will begin their 2006-07 campaigns with a head-to-head match, hosted by Alabama A&M in Huntsville, AL this weekend. The balance of the top 10 is led by sixth ranked New Jersey City University of Jersey City, NJ, the 4th place finisher at NCAA nationals last season. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore of Princess Anne, MD, a three-time national finalist, was seventh. Ranked eighth is Arkansas State University of Jonesboro, AR, and Bethune-Cookman College of Daytona Beach, FL, a three-time national finalist, was ninth. In tenth was Sacred Heart University of Fairfield, CT. Rounding out the Sweet-16 were the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 11th; Southern University of Baton Rouge, LA in 12th; Morgan State University of Baltimore, MD in 13th; Fayetteville State University of NC was 14th; Texas Southern University of Houston, TX was 15th; and Delaware State University of Dover, DE was 16th.
