PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./Univ. at Albany) posted 15 kills to lead the Hawks to an easy 3-0 win over Coppin State University in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action. The win moves the Hawks to 8-0 in the conference and clinches the MEAC North title. It is also the 17th consecutive win for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), the third longest winning streak in the nation. The Hawks (19-3, 8-0 MEAC) rolled past the Eagles (1-19, 0-7 MEAC) with scores of 30-18, 30-16 and 30-9 as every player on the roster saw action. Johnson led all hitters with 15 kills on 33 attempts, committing just five errors for a percentage of .303. The only other players in double digit statistics were UMES' Leah Amundson (Tuscon, Ariz./Arizona Western C.C.), who tallied 11 digs and Christina Estebane' (El Paso, Texas/Midland Coll.) who had 31 assists. Estebane' added six digs, three aces and five kills. Reigning MEAC Player of the Week Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove Calif./Pacifica H.S.) had seven kills while Holiday Eller (Minnetonka, Minn./St. Benilde-St. Margaret's H.S.) was third on the team with six kills. Eller and Kate Smith (Carpentersville, Ill./Dundee Crown H.S.) both added two service aces for the nation's number one serving team. As a unit the Hawks dominated the attack game, posting a .341 average to the Eagles' .012. CSU hit negative in games two and three. Offensively, they were led by Indira Laurencin who had eight kills. UMES now travels to Howard on October 23 and Hampton on October 29 for the final two conference matches of the season. They return home on November 2 for senior day when the Hawk's will honor the lone senior, Smith, and host North Carolina Central University. |
